Helical gears with up to 45° helix angles are primarily used for smooth, high-speed and high-load power transmission, particularly in automotive transmissions, industrial gearboxes and machinery where quiet operation is required. A 45° angle is offering higher contact ratios and greater strength compared to lower angles.
Applications
While larger angles increase machining difficulty, 45° is achievable as Ramco performs the Power Skiving operation on the 7-axis INTEGREX which involves turning and gear cutting operation in a single setup. In this process, a precision skiving cutter and the workpiece rotate simultaneously at a controlled angle to generate accurate gear teeth on the shaft. This advanced method allows high accuracy of tooth profile and surface finish.
