What is Tool Eye?

A “Tool Eye” – officially known as a tool setter or tool setting arm is an automated probing system used on CNC Turning and Vertical Machining Centers (VMCs) to measure tool length, diameter, tool profile, cutting point wear, and automatically update tool offsets in the machine control.

How a Tool Eye Works?

Contact or Non-Contact: The Tool setter is mounted on the machine table or an arm that swings into the workspace. During a tool setting cycle, the cutting tool touches the probe (or breaks a laser beam).

Signal Transmission: Tool Eye sends a signal via optical/ infrared or hardwired connection back to the CNC Controller of the machine.

Automatic updates: The Controller insantly calculates the tool’s dimensions and automatically updates the offset, eliminating the need for manual measurement or intervention.

Common Tool Setter Systems:

Table monuted (Contact): Renishaw Systems like the OTS or TS27R are mounted directly on the machine table. The tool rotates and touches the stylus to measure length and radius.

Arm-based (Contact): Tool setting arms swing into place only when needed and retract when machining begins. These are very common on lathes and VMCs.

Non-contact: Laser based systems (like the NC4) use a laser beam. When the tool breaks the beam, the machine records the measurement. This is ideal for tiny or fragile tools that could deflect during physical contact.
